Arvid "A.V." Virgil Plank

Arvid “A.V.” Virgil Plank, born on October 6, 1938, in Hope, Kansas, passed away peacefully at his home in Hope on July 7, 2026. His life, rooted deep in the community where he was both born and departed, was a testament to steadfastness, hard work, and quiet dedication.

A.V. graduated from Hope High School, where his early years were shaped by the values and friendships of small-town Kansas. He carried this foundation forward to Kansas State University, where he pursued a study of rocks, a discipline that reflected his curiosity about the world and its foundations. This inquisitive nature would shape much of his outlook on life.

A.V.’s professional legacy is marked by his remarkable 44-year career on the railroad. As a conductor, he became a familiar and respected presence across generations of railroad workers and travelers. His steady hand and reliability ensured that countless journeys—both literal and metaphorical—went smoothly. For over four decades, A.V.’s commitment to his work stood as an example of diligence and pride in craftsmanship.

Above all, A.V. was a devoted father, survived by his two sons, A.V. Plank Jr. and Todd Plank, as well as two step-daughters, Jenny Dorsey (Herman) and Jill Sink (Herman). His sister Janet Hoffman (Plank), multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren who continue his legacy.

His sons were the pride of his life, and his devotion to their wellbeing and happiness was unwavering. Through many chapters of life, A.V. remained a source of guidance and support for his family.

A.V. was proceeded in death by, his parents Cecil and Gladys (Book), his wife Jamalee (Skelton) Plank, his sisters Angeline (Anderson) Stevens and Laurel Scott, and brothers Dr. Gene Plank, Dr. Arnold Plank, and Thaine Plank.

Those who knew A.V. will remember him for his enduring presence, quiet strength, and the sense of stability he brought to those around him. His memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Please take a moment and leave a memory on A.V.’s online guest book at www.yazelmeglifh.com.
