Bernice Effie (Payden) Dickeson, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, in Topeka, Kansas. Born on November 1, 1940, in Coffeyville, Kansas,

 Bernice lived a life marked by creativity, dedication, and service to her community. Bernice’s career was as diverse as it was enriching. She worked as a cosmetologist and corporate assistant, offering her talents and skills with a gracious spirit. Her generous nature extended to her volunteer work, including meaningful contributions to the Catholic Church in Herington and the Stepping Stones Gardening Club in Warsaw, Missouri. Bernice earned her CNA and worked for a few years at Clinton Hospital in Missouri as well. 

A lifelong learner, Bernice attended Coffeyville High School and pursued college courses. She shared her passion for art by teaching at senior centers and 4-H programs, where she inspired many with her expertise and love for creative expression. An accomplished artist, she was published and skilled in multiple mediums including pastel oils, graphic art, and painted rocks. Bernice also crafted designer jewelry, showcasing her unique ability to blend artistry and craftsmanship. Her family remembers her fondly as a loving mother and grandmother, a devoted sister, and a cherished friend. 

She is survived by her daughter Debra and her husband Dr. Mark Stentstrom of Junction City, Kansas; her son Mark Geenens of Blue Mound, Kansas; and her daughter Laurie and her husband Steve Teter of Ottawa, Kansas. Bernice’s brother Dean Payden resides in Kansas City, Missouri. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Jeremy and Jamie Stentstrom of Parsons, Kansas; Megan and Jared Kiser of Hays, Kansas; Tara Denny of Independence, Missouri; Corey Denny of Ottawa, Kansas; and Sara Geenens of Orrick, Missouri. Her great-grandchildren—Graysen, Gehrig, Grisham, Aubrey, Amara, Ziah, Maurice Jr., Cory Jr., and Conrad—and her great-great-grandchildren Karmi, Kaisek, and Koa carry forward her spirit and memory. Among her many companions were Bernice’s fur babies Terri and Nella, and her 4 legged grandchildren; Prissy, Pearl, Hazel, Cash Money, Herbie, Anna and Gabriel; who brought joy to her later years.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, husband James Dickeson, her daughter-in-law Lily Geenens, and her beloved grandbaby Steven Wayne Denny.

Family, friends, and the community are invited to honor Bernice’s memory with a visitation on the evening of June 12, 2026, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Homes – Herington Chapel, located at 404 S Broadway St, Herington, KS 67449. Following the visitation, a Rosary will be held at the same location from 7:30 to 8:00 p.m. 

On June 13, 2026, a Mass celebrating Bernice’s life will be conducted at St. John Catholic Church, 716 Broadway, Herington, KS 67449, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Memorials contributions can be directed to The House of Midland Care in Topeka, Kansas. 

Bernice Effie Dickeson’s remarkable life of artistry, service, and unwavering love leaves an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her memory will continue to inspire and comfort her family and community for generations to come.
