James Weston Sommers

Jim’s life began on Monday June 29, 1970, in Newton, KS. He was the son of James Keith and Carlene Ann (Duvanel) Sommers. Jim was a graduate of Remington High School in the Class of 1988. He continued his education at Butler County Community College earning his associates degree. Jim was united in marriage to Kristi Potter on December 24, 1997, at the Potwin Christian Church. It was at this same church many years before Jim accepted Christ as his savior and was baptised. He continued his walk with Christ at Furley UMC and finally at Federated Church in Whitewater. Jim was a cattleman and farmer working with his dad and brother Tom. Keith, his dad, had always said he put Jim to work on the farm at the age of five. Jim defined himself by his faith, family, and work ethic and instilled these values in his children. He worked to build an operation that would last for generations to come. Jim was best at working with his hands welding and fixing equipment and talked continually about all he learned in shop class at Remington. His desire was for students to be equipped to take on a trade or just be able to care for their own property. Jim was the high school boys Sunday school teacher and chairman of the Pastor/Parish committee at Furley UMC. He served his community as a trustee for the Plum Grove township and spent several years serving on the Whitewater Watershed Board. Jim could be seen on the sidelines of the Remington football field as part of the chain gang, a job he truly enjoyed. He loved hunting, trapping, and teaching his children to love the outdoors. Jim passionately loved football, and was a proud shareholder in the Green Bay Packers. His greatest joy was his family which includes his wife Kristi Sommers; children Weston Sommers (Hannah Chambray), Cole (Dantlie) Sommers, and Taylor Sommers; grandson Kipp Sommers all of Burns; his brother Tom (Deandra) and their children, Jarrett, Jacob, and Kara Sommers of Burns, and sister Ginger (Jeff) Bastin of Hot Springs, AR; along with uncles, aunts, and cousins. Jim passed away at his home on Tuesday September 30, 2025. He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Jim’s family will gather with friends on Monday October 6, 2025, from 6-8 p.m. at the Federated Church in Whitewater. His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at 2:30 p.m., led by Pastor Jason Lowery at the Barn at Grace Hill (678 S. Grace Hill Road, Newton, KS 67114). Jim will be laid to rest in Potwin Cemetery. Lamb Funeral Home, Whitewater is serving the family. Memorial contributions in Jim’s name may be directed to the Remington High School Shop program.
