James Clayton Strome was born July 24, 1958, in Herington, Kansas, to Clayton and Mildred (Barnett) Strome. He was the second of three boys born to the family: John, James, and Rob. James was baptized during his childhood years.
Throughout his childhood, James and his brothers spent countless weekends with their father, Clayton, camping, hunting, fishing, and trapping—creating memories that would stay with him throughout his life.
James graduated from Herington High School in 1976. Following graduation, he continued his education in diesel mechanics, a trade at which he excelled. If something wasn't working properly, James could fix it.
James met Linda Sue Backhus, and the two were united in marriage on January 18, 1996, at the Christian Church in Herington, Kansas. Together they shared 30 beautiful years of marriage.
As an adult, James developed a passion for cooking. He often prepared enough food to feed an army and happily shared the leftovers with family, friends, and coworkers. He enjoyed watching cooking shows for new ideas and tips, which he incorporated into his own kitchen creations.
Over the years, James was employed by Hamm Quarry, CMF, U.S. Stone, EMS—where he traveled throughout the country— and most recently, Tiffany Cattle Company. After many years of hard work, he especially enjoyed the simplicity of operating equipment at Tiffany's while listening to his favorite podcasts and talk radio.
To put it simply, James was a humble and caring man. If a family member or friend was in need, he was there without hesitation. If an animal was hurt, he would bring it home and nurture it back to health. He would quite literally give you the shirt off his back, no questions asked.
James is survived by his loving wife, Linda Strome, of the home; his children, Clansey (Emily) Strome of Salina, and Nicholyn (Sheldon) Strome of Marion; his step children, Nicholas (Ashley) Herpich of Herington, and Morgan (James) Wegner of Abilene; his grandchildren, Barrett, Elliott, Jett, Ally, Huntin, Lincoln, Maria, and Ella; his great-granddaughter, Autumn; his brother, Robert (Ronda) Strome of Herington; and his mother, Mildred Strome, also of Herington.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clayton Strome, and his brother, John Strome.
James passed away on May 11, 2026, at his home in Herington, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Herington. Inurnment will take place at a later date.
Memorial contributions in James's name may be directed to Dickinson County Hospice, in care of Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, KS 67449.
