Jerry’s life began on November 3, 1950, in Marion. He was the son of Harry E. and Lorene (Holub) Nelson. His parents were married by Fr. Emil Kapaun and Jerry was the first baby baptized at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Marion. He was a 1968 graduate of Marion High School. Jerry went onto Emporia State University where he earned a degree in Industrial Education. He spent a few years teaching at Rosalia and then Syracuse. Jerry then moved to Colorado to work at the Eisenhower Tunnel on I-70. Jerry was a licensed contractor working for developers in Colorado and Nevada. He also worked in Arizona until returning to Marion to care for his sister Robin. He was good with his hands in the building and industrial trade. He travelled back and forth for a while to work for his friend at Sugar Loaf Lodge in Sedona, AZ. Jerry is survived by his sisters Sharon Ball of Houston, Pat (Dean) Bina of Marion, and Robin Nelson of Marion; his brother Fred (Vicki) Nelson of Olathe and nieces and nephews Jeff, and Chris Bina, Ty, Dustin, and Nicole Nelson, and Matthew Ball. He passed away on December 22, 2025, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Marion. He is preceded in death by his parents. Mass will be celebrated on Friday January 16, 2026, at 10 a.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Marion with a rosary service at 9:30 a.m. He will be laid to rest in Marion Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Jerry’s name may be directed to Marion County Food Bank in care of Yazel Megli Funeral Home.
