Louis William was born to Robert and Pauline (Patry) Wegerer on May 11, 1954, in Goessel, KS. He was the third born of 3 boys. Lou graduated from Marion High School in 1972. He played football and attended Kansas State University on a full ride football scholarship. He threw the shotput and discus during track season. He was a member of the track team that won state in 1972. He worked out with the Kansas State University Track Team for 1 season before focusing exclusively on football. He was a member of the Marion-Florence FFA. This organization furthered his interest in pursuing agriculture as a career. He earned his State FFA Degree. Lou graduated from Kansas State University in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. He maintained friendships with former football teammates and coaches. The family later purchased KSU football season tickets and traveled to bowl games to celebrate KSU’s football success. Married to Judith Ann Reznicek at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Pilsen on January 21, 1978. Married by Msgr. Arthur Tonne, and Fr. Gerald Pathe. The couple had met while attending elementary school. They met again after high school and began dating. Lou worked for several employers before being hired with the Santa Fe Railroad which later merged with Burlington Northern. He retired from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad after 37 years of employment. He worked as a brakeman as well as a locomotive engineer. His passion for farming and ranching led him to work for the railroad full-time to farm as much as he could while not at work. He enjoyed keeping a herd of cattle at the farm. He often took his vacation days from BNSF to harvest wheat or get the fall harvest completed. He farmed on his own and also with his parents. Upon his retirement from BNSF he enjoyed being a full-time farmer. Lou and Judy held deep family values (roots) and love of God and family. They believed in taking family vacations to make memories and going yearly to the Kansas State Fair. They delighted in caring for their grandchildren. Lou is survived by his daughter Andrea Salsbury, husband Drew. Marion, KS Their children: Jaxon, Ryker, Wyatt, Basil, and Darby Salsbury and daughter Allison Unruh, and her husband Jacob. Goessel, KS, and their children: Jade, Ruby, Opal, and Onyx Unruh and several nieces and nephews. Lou passed away on Saturday July 26, 2025, at his home. He is preceded in death by his wife: Judy Wegerer, his parents Robert and Pauline Wegerer and brothers C. Robert (Bob) and Raymond Wegerer and his In-laws: Cyril and Elisabeth (Betty) Reznicek.
His family will gather with friends on Friday August 1, 2025, at Yazel Megli Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. A Rosary will be prayed on Saturday August 2, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Marks Catholic Church, Marion where Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday. He will be laid to rest in Marion Cemetery. Memorial donations in Lou’s name may be directed to USD 408 for Scholarship Programs.
