Norman Lee Smalley, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on May 4, 2025, at the age of 95.Norman was born on September 23, 1929, to Eugene and Abigail (Powell) Smalley. He was raised alongside his brothers, Jack and Bob Smalley, in a home that valued hard work, integrity, and faith.He proudly served in the United States Navy from June 1948 to June 1952, specializing in aerial photography. He was subsequently assigned to photographic reconnaissance Squadron VC-61 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea. His work contributed to critical military operations and mapping efforts during the Korean War.After returning from service, Norman eventually met Barbara Lou (Wiens) on a blind date—a moment that would define the rest of his life. When he first saw her he knew that she was the one. They were married on November 6, 1955, in Whitewater, Kansas, and shared nearly 70 loving years together.Norman and Barbara lived in several states before settling in Kansas. In Salina, they opened the first two Dairy Queen Brazier restaurants in Kansas—Norman managed the North store and Barbara the South—creating a successful business that involved the whole family. After retiring in 1992, they returned to Whitewater.Norman will be remembered for his quiet strength, steady nature, and devotion to family. He enjoyed square dancing with Barbara, raising animals during their time in Falun, and traveling—particularly to San Diego, one of their favorite destinations.He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara, in 2024; his parents, Eugene and Abigail Smalley; his brothers, Jack Smalley and Bob Smalley, Granddaughter Morgan Smalley and an infant son.Norman is survived by his daughter Marcy Smalley; son Jack (Annette) Smalley; granddaughters Taylor (Aaron) Moon, Jordan Bickford, and Megan (Thomas Flanagan) Smalley; great-granddaughters Ava Moon, Aadan Blair, and Elliot Blair; great-grandsons William Moon and Nicholas Moon; and a large extended family and circle of friends who will miss his calm wisdom and warm presence. A Memorial service will be held at the Federated Church of Whitewater on Saturday June 14, 2025 at 2 P.M.
