Quinnie Dorothea Surls

February 26, 1920 — May 9, 2022

Quinnie’s life began on February 26, 1920, in Liberty, MS. She was the daughter of Luther “Pete” S. and Lois (Hurst) Duck. Quinnie was a 1938 graduate of Liberty High School and attended business college at the New Orleans Business School. She was united in marriage to Vernon Surls on November 10, 1946, in Herington, KS. Quinnie was a homemaker and had worked briefly as an office receptionist in a dental office. She enjoyed being outside, visiting with friends and neighbors. Quinnie enjoyed her garden and baking goodies in the kitchen. She and Vernon enjoyed fishing together and travelling south each summer to visit family. Quinnie is survived by her daughters Lavona Christner of Herington, and Marchia (Mike) Havard of Liberty, MS; grandchildren Paul and James (Kate) Christner of Herington; great grandchildren Evan, Caden and Natalie Christner, sister-in-law Margaret Duck of Baker, LA, and niece Angie. Quinnie passed away on May 9, 2022, at Chapman Valley Manor in Chapman. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Vernon and brother Luther Duck. Her family will gather with friends on Friday May 13, 2022, from 9-10 a.m. at Yazel Megli Funeral Home, Herington. Her graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. at the Fort Riley Post Cemetery (Main Gate off 70). Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to the City of Herington for the placement of a new columbarium at Sunset Hill.
