Shirley Ann Bartel

Shirley’s life began on December 8, 1935, the daughter of Bill and Esther (Brown) Buller in Hillsboro, Kansas. She graduated from Hillsboro High Class of 1953. She married Lee Bartel on October 10, 1953 in Hillsboro.

Shirley worked as a clerk at Clark Pharmacy and as a presser at Miller’s Cleaners and when it changed ownership to Och’s Cleaners in Newton. She loved attending arts and craft shows with the three of her five sisters. They traveled to Branson, Missouri and War Eagle in Arkansas and all of the smaller craft fairs locally. They would always end up with matching sweatshirts and purses. Her yard and flowers were always immaculate and she loved decorating her yard for every holiday and season. Shirley loved to bake zwieback and sticky buns on Saturdays. At Thanksgiving her pumpkin pie was always the best.

Her loving family includes her husband, Lee Bartel of Newton; daughters and their spouses, Terrie and Gery Lock of Hesston, Sandy and Jerry Puckett of Whitewater, Cindy and Mike Bohannan of Augusta; grandchildren, Chris (Regina) Lock, Amber (Torey) Hett, Brandon Puckett, Janie (Danny) Becker, Dustin Gehring, Jessica Bohannan, Matthew (Kaylee) Bohannan; great-grandchildren, Conner, Makenzie, Rylee, Makilynn and Keaton Puckett, Ryker and Ripley Becker, Max, Dexter and Stella Seymour, Tuff Gehring, Everly and Maverick Bohannan, Shanese London, Shanae Myrick (Tyler Lofton), Shaquia Barnes, Sebastian and Sabrea Lock; one great grandson, Zadrian Graham; sisters, Betty (Jim) Larson of Tacoma, Washington, Helen Entz of Newton and Beverly (Dean) Hicks of Grass Valley, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Virginia “Ginnie” Edmiston and Norma Grothe. Shirley passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at the age of 86 years old.

Her family will gather with friends on Tuesday, January 11, from 12 noon - 1:00 with her service following at 1:00 both at Lamb Funeral Home, 120 S. Main, Whitewater, Kansas 67154. Interment will be in Haven of Rest Cemetery in Hillsboro at 3:00 p.m.
