William John Shippy

William “Bill” John Shippy passed away peacefully at his home near Woodbine, KS on October 13, 2023, with his family at his side.  He was born March 18, 1938, at his parents’ rural Chapman farm home. His parents were Harvey and Mary Margaret (Wilson) Shippy.

Bill grew up in the Woodbine community, attending school at Liberty Center, Chapman High School, and Sterling College.  He enlisted in the National Guard in 1960 and served six years before being honorably discharged in 1966.  Bill was a member of the Woodbine United Methodist Church and served on many church committees including chairing the Trustee board.

On July 19, 1964, Bill was joined in marriage to Nora Engel at the Presbyterian Church in Junction City. They raised five children on the family farm that his grandfather purchased from the railroad in 1879.  He sowed and harvested many bushels of wheat and baled many a bale for their cattle herd.  Bill enjoyed all aspects of the farm, but especially enjoyed working with his cow/calf operation.  He was an advocate for the agricultural community, serving on the Woodbine Cooperative board.   He also drove a school bus for several years, providing safe transportation for many area children.

Bill’s family was the center of his life.  He is survived by his wife, Nora, daughter Charlotte Barten (Jim) of Woodbine, sons Kevin (Teresa) of Manhattan, Darrell (Kay) of Hays, and Brian (Carrie) of Woodbine; grandchildren Jaycelyn Walker (Taylor), Anna Pachta (Ryan), Jordyn Ross (Quinten), Jaryth Barten, Ethan Shippy, Jessyka Barten (fiancé Anders Mikkelson), McKenzie Shippy, Wyatt Shippy (Tristyn), Claire Shippy, and Katelyn Shippy; great-grandchildren Ridley Walker, Nina Pachta and Kollin Shippy.

Preceding him in death were his daughter Patricia, his parents, brothers Harlan, Alden, David and Dale, and sisters Vida Blockcolsky and Amy Elson.

The family will receive friends on Monday, October 16, 2023, from 6-8 p.m. in the Woodbine United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at the Woodbine United Methodist Church, with interment in the Lyons Creek German Baptist Cemetery.  Following the cemetery service, a luncheon will be held at the Woodbine United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
