Adeline S Bernhardt

Adeline Susanna Bentz Bernhardt, Age 98, passed away on December 13th, 2020 at Homestead Health Center in Wichita, Kansas. Adeline will be remembered for her strength, dedication to her family, and her unwavering faith, fellowship, and commitment to the Lutheran church.  She was resourceful, organized, an excellent seamstress, a great cook, and volunteered endless hours with her husband to the Tampa, Kansas community.

Adeline was born on June 6th, 1922 to Adolph and Anna Bentz on a farm near Tampa, Kansas. She was baptized on June 25th, 1922 at North Tampa Lutheran Church and was confirmed on June 5th,1935.  She graduated from Tampa rural high school in May 1940 where she played in the band and orchestra, sang in the glee club quartet, and performed in plays. After high school, she attended Emporia state teacher’s college for one year and earned a three-year state teaching certificate in which she taught for 7 years due to a shortage of teachers during the war. She retired from USD 397 after 25 years of service in May 1987.

She married Ted Bernhardt June 4th,1944 in North Tampa Lutheran Church. The Lord blessed them with two children Barney Ray Bernhardt and Kathy Kay Bernhardt. Adeline was a woman of strong faith and joined the Lutheran Ladies Aid in which she held many offices. She was also the organist at the Lutheran church in Tampa for 65 years and her and Ted were youth counselors for many years.

She is survived by her son Barney Bernhardt and wife Linda of Wichita, Kansas, sister Leona Kleiber of Tampa, Kansas, sister Ellen Erickson of Tacoma, Washington, son in law Carl Hubbard of Wellington, Kansas, 11 Grandchildren, and 18 Great Grandchildren.  Those preceding her in death were her husband Ted Bernhardt and daughter Kathy Hubbard.  A private service will be held for the family at Yazel-Megli- Zeiner Funeral home in Marion, Kansas on December 18th at 2 pm and will be live-streamed.
