Lorena Estes

September 10, 1919 — May 20, 2018

HERINGTON - Lorena was born September 10, 1919, at Sparks, Oklahoma.  She was the daughter of Walter Nathaniel and Maude Frances (Longshore) Decker.  She had three brothers and four sisters.  Her brother Harold Decker died when he was just a year old.  She departed this life on Sunday, May 20, 2018, at Diversicare of Council Grove.

She was raised in Parkerville and graduated from Parkerville High School. She attended Parkerville Baptist Church and loved to read.  She liked learning. History was interesting to her.  She enjoyed researching genealogy, travelling, and going different places. She liked to stay busy and would past the time by embroidering and painting.

She married Vern L. Estes on January 29, 1940, at Junction City, Kansas.  They lived in the White City area and raised their six children in the White City school district. Her husband, Vern, preceded her in death on April 12, 1998.  She is also preceded in death by three children, Sue Metcalfe in February of this year, Carole Price in 2002, Walter Estes in October of 1999; two grandchildren Donald Gaither and Connie Rodriquez; two brothers, Ralph and Marion Decker, three sisters, Marie Simpson, Helen and Alice Reynozo; and her parents. 

She is survived by her two daughters, Peggy Barber and her husband Gary of White City, Janet Gaither and husband Jim of Joplin, MO; a son Vern “Tinker” Estes of White City; a sister Lucille Dutro and husband Mark of Deming, NM; 14 grandchildren; forty-nine great grandchildren, and several great great grandchildren. 

Graveside service will be 2:00pm, Thursday, May 24th, 2018, at the Parkerville Cemetery, with Pastor Bob Strom, officiating.  Memorial Contributions are to the White City Library or Parkerville Baptist Church; and they may be sent to the Zeiner Funeral Home-Herington, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, KS, 67449-3038.
