Max Dwayne Wendell

August 4, 1939 — September 20, 2019

Max Dwayne Wendell departed this life on Friday, September 20, 2019, at the Legacy of Herington, KS.   He was the son of Haines J. and Zella May (Britt) Wendell. He was born August 4, 1939, at Rock Springs, Wyoming.   He was raised by his Aunt Ava from age three and husband, Fred Reiff.  After Fred’s demise, Aunt Ava remarried Joe Cox.

Max served in the U. S. Army.  He was a farmer, worked at a missile base as a guard, was a rural mail carrier, a feed mill worker at Navarre, and retired after 35 years from Tri-County Telephone Company as central office technician.  When he was not working or at his wife’s café, he would go fishing.

Max is preceded in death by brothers, Larry and Craig Wendell; and grandson, Brandon Salimonski.

Max married Brigitte Kieser, December 27, 1993, at the Methodist Church in Hope.  She survives of their country home in rural Herington.  He is also survived by a son, Mark Wendell; two daughters, Laurie Hickle, Connie Harzman; two stepsons, Thomas Gerd Fechter, Marcus Fechter; grandchildren, Mathew and Madeline Wendell, Carmen and Audrey Fibert, Anthony Salimonski, Bailee Hickle,  Joshua and David Harzman, Micheal Charles; and step-granddaughter, Julia Fechter; siblings, Lloyd Wendell (wife-Corina), Heidi Wendell, Debbie Ferris (husband-Dave),  Dan Cox (wife-Linda), Gary Cox (wife-Pat), Darrell Tomlinson (wife-Linda) Dick Wendell (wife-Carolyn), Yolanda Maine (husband-Carl), and sister-in-law, Sheila Wendell.

Funeral services will be Thursday, September 26, 2019, 10:30am, at the New Basel United Church of Christ, Abilene, with Rev. William L. Graves, officiating.  Military committal and graveside service will follow at the church cemetery.  Family will greet friends, Wednesday evening at the Yazel-Megli-Zeiner Funeral Home-Herington Chapel from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.

Memorials have been designated to the Legacy of Herington or Salina, New Basel United Church of Christ, or the Woodbine Fire Station; and may be sent in care of Yazel- Megli-Zeiner Funeral Home-Herington Chapel, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, KS, 67449-3038.
