Joyce Kern

Joyce's life began on September 7th, 1941, in Herington.  She was the daughter of Bernard and Gloy (Shipley) Woosley.  Joyce was a 1959 graduate of Herington High School and attended St. John's Catholic School through 8th grade.  Joyce worked as a baker for Mastan’s Bakery and Catlin’s IGA in Herington and the Hays House in Council Grove before retiring from managing Walmart bakeries.  She was active in the ladies bowling league in Herington and ran the concession stands at the ballfield for several years.  Joyce previously owned the Dutch Lunch Bar for several years, as well.  She enjoyed quilting, bingo, and visiting the casino.  Joyce is a parishioner at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Basehor, KS, and was a former parishioner at St. John’s Catholic Church in Herington, KS.  She is survived by her children Marty (Susan) Kern of Raymore, MO, Suzanne Myers of Salina, Rodney (Renee) Kern of Rocky Ford, CO, and Mark (Cathy) Kern of Winchester; grandchildren Crystal (Alan) Austin, Curtis Trevethan, Cortni (Josh) Jansen, Corey (Nicole) Buhrman, Tricia (TC Holliday) Myers, Tiffany (Brandon Tatro) Myers, Katy (Glynn Tipton) Higby, David Kern, Nikki Davidson, Kris (Alyssa) Kern, Mark Kern, Anna Kern, Mary Kern, Joseph Kern, Christopher Kern, Cecelia Kern, and Monica Kern; great-grandchildren William, Claire, Sophie, Greyson, Aubrey, Natalie, Jaylynn, Nateah, Grayson, Josalynn, Allison, Michael, Makayla, Throttle, Madison, Lincoln, Jackson, Michael, Kaitlyn, Caiden, Clayton, Carson, and Addie and her sister Janice (Mike) Ulferts of MN.  Joyce passed on to eternal life peacefully at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, June 22nd, 2021.  She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Jennifer Gerhardt. Her family will gather with friends on Sunday, June 27th from 2-4 p.m. at Yazel- Megli Funeral Home.  A rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m.  Joyce's Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 28th at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church led by Father Peter O’Donnell and Father Richard McDonald.  She will be laid to rest in Sunset Hill Cemetery following the Mass.  Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to St. John’s Catholic Church.  Please sign her online guestbook and leave a memory of Joyce at www.ymzfh.com.
